Original Amaretti from Liguria – a cookie with a thousand-year history in Gamla Stan

The name Amaretti comes from the Italian word amaro, meaning bitter – a tribute to the characteristic taste of bitter apricot kernels. It is precisely these that give the cookie its unique balance between sweetness and a slight bitterness.

The Amaretti cookie has been baked in Italy for over a thousand years. According to some legends, it was monks who first started baking them in monasteries, where the tradition of sweet pastries and liqueurs often took shape. Today, the cookie is considered the forerunner of modern macarons.

Another story says that it was Caterina de’ Medici, the Italian princess who married King Henry II of France in the 16th century, who brought the almond cookie tradition to France and thus helped spread this delicacy throughout Europe.

Our Amaretti Virginia are still baked today according to the same essential recipe from 1860 – with few ingredients, great craftsmanship, and deep respect for tradition.

The classic Amaretti almond cookies are also naturally gluten- and dairy-free, without preservatives or seed oils.
